Songs from suicide bridge (1984) by David Kauffman and Eric Caboor
Songs from Suicide Bridge was a small folk project made by aspiring songwriters David Kauffman and Eric Caboor in 1984. However, due to the lack of funds, they were only able to make 500 vinyl pressings and the majority of the copies went to numerous college radio stations around the country. The album was only put on streaming services in 2015.
Best song: Angel of Mercy
Grady says Serotonin (2023) by Massie
A newer band from the DC area that continues the legacy of punk rock. The female lead rock band is definitely one to pay attention to as they show a lot of promise of making it big in the indie rock scene.
Best song: TV
Tiger Trap (1993) by Tiger Trap
Tiger trap were a short lived band that only released one album before they disbanded, due to sticking with their punk rock values that they promoted and not selling out to the music industry. Their name was inspired by the Calvin and Hobbes cartoon. They are considered to be one of the bands that popularized Twee-pop.
Best song: Super Crush
Recovery Mile (2024) by Grace Gardner
With Recovery Mile, Grace Gardner has proven that she is an up-and-coming artist worth paying attention to. Her soulful lyricism and colorful voice makes her stand out from all the other young indie pop artists trying to break out into the music industry.
Best song: Decoy
Lullabies in a glass wilderness (2007) by Lalleshwari (Katie Jane Garside)
Katie Jane Garside has had a crazy career with numerous aliases. However, I believe her self released album Lullabies in a glass wilderness, to contain some of her best work. Her whimsical voice across the haunting background tracks, really sold her as an important figure in the indie avant-folo scene.
Best song: For you I hold my breath
Vyva Melinkolya (2018) by Vyva Melinkolya
Vyva Melinkolya’s self titled album marks a turning point in her career as she embraced a more ambient shoegaze sound in comparison to her earlier folk inspired works that can only be found on some corners of the internet. Although confessional lyrics and soft vocals cement her as a beautiful singer, I feel like the storytelling comes from her refreshingly unique production. I truly believe that she is the modern artist that we need to revive shoegaze.
Best song: 1:00 AM
